The first misconception is that scrap recycling is big business. While there has recently been an increase in incentives for companies that recycle, this is not because there is a vast “junkyard industry” that is occurring on the sidelines. What has happened, however, is that U.S. scrap recyclers have processed more than 130 million tons of scrap waste. This has resulted in the country saving energy, preserving natural resources, reducing greenhouse emissions and more. The second misconception is that all recycled materials end up in local recycling plants. Some people believe that everything recycled is repurposed at a local recycling plant. This, however, is not the case. The main reason for this is that with the increase of recycling, these plants can become overwhelmed with the amount that needs to be recycled. In the past, when this happened, companies would dump the recyclable materials into landfills. Now, to prevent this, extra recyclable materials are then transported to other recycling plants.

The third misconception is that all of our recyclables are exported. While it is true that some of the overflow is exported, this is only the case for a small percentage of materials. For the most part, recyclables are not transported. Finally, the fourth misconception is that recycling trucks waste energy. That is, recycling trucks use up more power than is saved when we recycle. The truth is that the amount of energy that vehicles use is minor in comparison to the amount of energy that is saved from recycling.
